Chad to gain 40 MW power plant as Algeria strengthens energy ties
The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mourad Adjal, has announced the imminent laying of the foundation stone for a 40-megawatt power plant in N’Djamena, Chad’s capital. The project, spearheaded by Sonelgaz International, marks a significant step in Algeria’s expanding energy cooperation across the African continent.
Speaking during the inauguration of the Algeria-Niger solidarity power plant in Niamey, which boasts the same capacity of 40 MW, the minister highlighted the successful completion of the project in Niger. This achievement underscores Sonelgaz International’s ability to deliver large-scale energy initiatives beyond Algeria’s borders within tight deadlines.
next steps for Chad’s power infrastructure
Mr. Adjal confirmed that preparations are already underway for the new 40 MW power plant in Chad, with the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled to take place in the coming days. The project aligns with a broader strategy to reinforce energy partnerships with African nations, including those in West Africa.
Highlighting the growing demand for Sonelgaz International’s expertise, the minister noted strong interest from multiple African countries, such as Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique. These projects form part of ambitious energy programs the company aims to execute, leveraging its technical know-how and efficiency in project delivery.
The initiative is expected to serve as a catalyst for Algerian public and private enterprises, integrating them into various phases of the project under a value-chain approach. This collaboration is anticipated to enhance the participation of national expertise and companies in African markets.
a milestone in Algeria-Chad energy cooperation
Recall that Algeria and Chad signed an agreement last May to establish the power plant in N’Djamena. The move reflects the commitment to fostering stronger South-South cooperation, in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to support African nations in their development goals.
