Algeria and Chad strengthen ties with new power plant project

A landmark 40-megawatt power plant gifted by Algeria to Chad marks a major leap in bilateral cooperation between Algiers and N’Djamena.

The ceremony for the groundbreaking of the Afro-Algerian Solidarity Power Plant, held in N’Djamena, was co-chaired by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Chadian counterpart, Allamaye Halina. This infrastructure project is set to address Chad’s growing electricity demand while reinforcing energy security across the capital and surrounding regions.

Sonatrach’s affiliate Sonelgaz International leads the project

The initiative aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s strategic directives to deepen Algerian-African partnerships. A technical briefing outlined the project’s engineering design, implementation phases, and operational potential, emphasizing its role in strengthening energy cooperation between the two nations.

Overseen by Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, the plant is being developed by Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the state-owned Sonelgaz Group. Equipped with advanced gas turbines, the facility aims to bolster N’Djamena’s power grid and extend reliable electricity to neighboring areas.

Prime Minister Ghrieb, representing Algeria at the event, highlighted the project’s symbolic and practical significance as one of the first tangible outcomes of high-level commitments made during recent diplomatic exchanges. «This power plant embodies the strong political will uniting our brotherly nations. It reflects our shared ambition to elevate Algeria-Chad relations into a robust strategic partnership built on solidarity, mutual growth, and common interests.»

Building a future of shared prosperity

In his address, Ghrieb underscored President Tebboune’s unwavering commitment to fostering deeper ties with African partners, particularly Chad, through tangible development initiatives. «President Tebboune is deeply invested in strengthening fraternal bonds and deepening bilateral cooperation to create an integrated and thriving African space.»

He noted that this project represents the first of many promising results stemming from the April 2026 official visit, during which both leaders discussed ambitious cooperation programs spanning key sectors. «The discussions with President Tebboune laid the groundwork for transformative agreements that will drive progress and stability across our nations.»

Energy cooperation as a driver of regional stability

Ghrieb framed the power plant as more than an infrastructure milestone—it is a testament to Algeria’s belief in African solutions for African challenges. «This project demonstrates our conviction that meaningful African cooperation can unlock shared prosperity through concrete achievements that directly benefit our people.»

He added that both nations are prioritizing large-scale projects—such as the Trans-Saharan Highway, fiber-optic connectivity, and enhanced air transport and logistics—to unlock economic potential and foster trade. «These initiatives will break geographical barriers, revitalize inland regions, and create new opportunities for investment and commerce.»

Unified vision for Africa’s future

Addressing regional dynamics, Ghrieb reaffirmed Algeria and Chad’s dedication to coordinated action on continental issues. «We remain steadfast in our commitment to align on regional and global challenges, guided by the shared belief that our destinies are intertwined and that African solutions must respect state sovereignty.»

He concluded by reaffirming Algeria’s pledge to support Chad’s development journey. «On behalf of President Tebboune, I reiterate Algeria’s unwavering support for Chad and our determination to strengthen this partnership to drive progress, stability, and shared prosperity.»
