Benin and World Bank launch 10-year initiative to boost jobs and human capital
Cotonou witnessed a historic milestone on Friday, July 17 as Benin and the World Bank Group formalized a groundbreaking decade-long partnership designed to propel the West African nation toward inclusive, sustainable economic growth.
The launch ceremony of the 2026-2036 Country Partnership Framework (CPF) drew high-level attendees, including Benin’s government officials, diplomatic corps, and development partners, underscoring the significance of this collaborative effort.
The CPF 2026-2036 is meticulously structured around three pivotal pillars to align with Benin’s long-term development priorities. First, it prioritizes human capital enhancement through initiatives targeting improved nutrition, healthcare access, and workforce skill development. Second, it focuses on expanding critical infrastructure to support economic activities. Third, it aims to accelerate private sector-led economic transformation by fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. Additionally, the framework embeds the Prevention and Resilience Program, aimed at reinforcing national stability and social cohesion across Benin.
Anna Bjerde, World Bank Group Managing Director of Operations, praised President Romuald Wadagni’s administration for its bold vision, particularly the strategic roadmap Alafia Benin 2060. She emphasized that this partnership arrives at a pivotal juncture, marked by Benin’s political dynamism and forward-looking policies. Bjerde highlighted the critical role of investing in human capital and productive infrastructure to drive sustainable job creation and economic expansion.
Bjerde reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Benin’s efforts to enhance its economic competitiveness and elevate living standards nationwide. For his part, Benin’s Minister of Economy, Finance, and Cooperation, Aristide Medenou, emphasized that the CPF 2026-2036 seamlessly integrates with national priorities—especially agriculture, private sector growth, and youth employment.
Benin’s government views this partnership as a catalyst for accelerating socio-economic transformation, building resilience, and unlocking unprecedented opportunities for future generations.
