Since assuming office on 24 May 2026, Benin’s newly elected President Romuald Wadagni has embarked on a pivotal diplomatic tour across West Africa. His first official visit abroad led him to Nigeria on 1 June 2026, reaffirming the strategic partnership between the two nations. The following day, he arrived in Niamey and Ouagadougou, marking a historic moment as the first Beninese head of state to visit Niger since the political transition in 2023.
Rebuilding diplomatic bridges in the Sahel
President Wadagni’s agenda is centered on restoring and strengthening relations with the Alliance of Sahel States, a coalition formed by Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. While previous administrations had attempted mediation—including a working visit by a Nigerien delegation to Cotonou in July 2024—progress has stalled, leaving critical economic and social ties in limbo.
Economic stakes and regional integration
One of the most pressing challenges is the closure of borders between Benin and Niger, which has severely disrupted trade, mobility, and regional stability. The economic repercussions extend beyond both nations, impacting neighboring countries and undermining the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) integration efforts. Restoring cross-border movement and fostering cooperation are key priorities for President Wadagni’s administration.
