The diplomatic friction between Burkina Faso and the European Union has intensified, with authorities in Ouagadougou declaring two EU diplomats unwelcome. These officials have been given a strict three-day deadline to leave the country. The individuals targeted by this expulsion are the Deputy Head of Delegation, who also serves as the Head of the Political, Press, and Information Section for the European Union Delegation in Burkina Faso, and the Programme Officer for the same delegation. This decisive action was announced on Tuesday evening, marking a critical point in the diplomatic landscape.

This expulsion follows a period of significant deterioration in diplomatic ties, particularly since the European Parliament passed a resolution on June 18, 2026. The resolution, titled « Persistence of the repression of civic space and fundamental freedoms in Burkina Faso », severely criticized the internal situation within the country.

The adoption of this resolution by Brussels was met with strong disapproval from Burkinabè authorities. In response, Ouagadougou had previously summoned Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi, the Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation to Burkina Faso, on June 22. During that meeting, the nation’s profound disagreement with the European Parliament’s stance was formally communicated.
