The Malian government delegation, led by the Minister of State for Reconciliation, Peace and National Cohesion, General Ismaël Wagué, arrived in Bandiagara on Monday, May 11, 2026. The visit followed a devastating terrorist attack on May 6 against the villages of Kori-Kori and Gomossogou in the Bankass district.
The delegation formally conveyed the state’s condolences during a ceremony at the regional governorship. In a gesture of solidarity, they distributed 25 tons of millet, 25 tons of rice, and a financial aid package of 20 million FCFA to support the affected families.
While authorities have not yet released an official death toll, local sources—including the Dana Ambassagou dozo hunters—report over 60 fatalities, numerous injuries, and severe material damage. The attack has been attributed to fighters from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM).
Youssouf Toloba, leader of the Dana Ambassagou militia, stated that the villages were deliberately targeted after refusing to sign “peace agreements” with armed terrorist groups. Noël Tessougué, deputy chief of the dozos, further warned that the militia would no longer tolerate villages that collaborate with JNIM fighters.
During the visit, Minister Ismaël Wagué reaffirmed the transitional authorities’ commitment to ending violence against civilians across the country. He concluded his speech with a call for national unity, solidarity, and cohesion to confront the ongoing security challenges.
