Mali suspends jeune afrique magazine sales over press freedom concerns

The Union of African Free Press Journalists (UJPLA) has strongly condemned Mali’s decision to ban the sale and distribution of Jeune Afrique magazine nationwide, calling it a severe violation of press freedom and citizens’ right to balanced information.

For decades, Jeune Afrique has been a leading pan-African publication, fostering democratic debate and providing in-depth analysis of political, economic, and social issues across the continent. The magazine’s prohibition sets a dangerous precedent, contradicting Mali’s international obligations under human rights charters, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The UJPLA emphasizes that press freedom is not a negotiable privilege but an inalienable right enshrined in international law. The union argues that such restrictions undermine transparency and stifle diverse perspectives essential for a healthy democracy.

In response to the ban, the UJPLA has taken the following actions:

  • Firmly condemned the arbitrary decision, labeling it an attack on democratic values;
  • Demanded immediate revocation of the sales ban on Jeune Afrique in Mali;
  • Urged Malian authorities to engage in constructive dialogue and uphold fundamental freedoms;
  • Called on human rights and press freedom advocates to unite against this repressive measure.

The UJPLA remains steadfast in its commitment to defending press freedom and the safety of journalists across Africa. The union calls on all stakeholders to prioritize transparency, accountability, and the protection of democratic principles.
