Malian court convicts french intelligence agent, deepening diplomatic rift

A Malian judicial body has handed down a 20-year prison sentence to a French intelligence operative. This development comes as Paris vehemently rejects the accusations as “unfounded,” further intensifying the already strained diplomatic relations with Bamako.

Mali : un agent français condamné à 20 ans de prison pour « atteinte à la sûreté de l’État »

A fresh chill has descended upon the relationship between Paris and Bamako. Malian legal authorities have sentenced a French intelligence agent to two decades behind bars for offenses against state security, as confirmed by judicial sources on Friday, June 5.

The individual, identified as Yann V., held diplomatic immunity and was officially assigned to the French Embassy in Mali. Malian intelligence services apprehended him in Bamako on August 13, 2025.

Accused of plotting against institutions

According to Malian officials, the French officer was allegedly involved in an espionage ring designed to destabilize the transitional government’s institutions and orchestrate a coup d’état. Several Malian military officers implicated in the same case remain in custody and have yet to face trial.

In addition to his prison term, the French national faces a 20-year ban from Mali and must pay a fine amounting to approximately 5,400 euros.

France rejects allegations

Immediately following his arrest in 2025, France condemned the accusations as “baseless,” subsequently suspending its counter-terrorism cooperation with Bamako and expelling two Malian diplomats.

Worsening diplomatic relations

This conviction unfolds against a backdrop of the increasing estrangement between Mali and its Western allies. Since the coups of 2020 and 2021, the ruling junta has progressively strengthened its political and military alliances with Russia, often at the expense of its historical ties with France, the former colonial power.
