Ousmane Sonko’s Dakar march draws massive support

Marche de Dakar : Ousmane Sonko accueilli par des centaines de partisans en liesse

Hundreds of jubilant supporters warmly welcomed Ousmane Sonko, the Prime Minister of Senegal and leader of the ruling Pastef party, during a significant public event this Sunday, May 17. The occasion was a “grand walking tour” meticulously organized by the departmental coordination of his political movement in Dakar.

Dressed entirely in white, the Prime Minister was met with an enthusiastic multitude, many of whom passionately chanted “Sonko Président” as he made his way through the crowd. He subsequently immersed himself in a vibrant public interaction, engaging directly with the eager participants. Prominent figures from the party were also present, lending their support to the march. Among them were Abass Fall, the Mayor of Dakar, and Daouda Ngom, the Minister of Higher Education. The procession commenced at the iconic Place de la Nation and was set to conclude at the Rond-point Jet d’eau, marking a considerable route through the city.

This extensive walking event, themed “Dakar in stride behind the Pros,” served multiple strategic objectives. It aimed to “celebrate citizen participation and peaceful collective action” while also striving to “consolidate unity around the vision championed by” Sonko. This demonstration of solidarity comes as the Pastef party intensifies preparations for its crucial elective congress, scheduled for June 6, 2026, where the party president will be chosen.
