Progress and integration within the Alliance of Sahel States

The Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is steadily solidifying its achievements across several strategic areas. This assessment was shared by Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad, during a recent media address.

According to the head of Nigerien diplomacy, the three member nations—Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—have intensified their defense collaboration. This includes the establishment of a unified military force and a joint operational headquarters situated in Niamey, designed to streamline security operations across the territory.

Expanding diplomatic and economic horizons

On the international stage, the member nations are moving toward a shared diplomatic strategy. This involves a common diplomatic map and synchronized representation to ensure the Confederation speaks with a single voice in global forums. Furthermore, authorities emphasized that the recognition of international bodies remains a matter of national sovereignty for each member state.

Integration is also expanding beyond defense. Plans include an investment bank to fund regional development and the launch of joint media platforms—including television, radio, and print—to improve institutional communication and combat misinformation targeting the Sahel region.

Regional solidarity and security commitment

Recently, an AES delegation led by General Célestin Simporé visited Bamako to offer support to Mali following the passing of Army General Sadio Camara. The delegation met with Mali’s transitional president, General Assimi Goïta, to deliver condolences from Niger and Burkina Faso.

During the visit, the late general was honored as a pivotal figure in regional military cooperation. The delegation reaffirmed the collective resolve of the AES states to battle armed groups and escalate their efforts against terrorist threats in the Sahel. The head of the delegation stressed that these forces intend to intensify their actions to ensure long-term stability.
