Rabat: US embassy marks 250th independence anniversary, highlights enduring Morocco partnership

The United States Embassy in Rabat recently commemorated the 250th anniversary of American independence. This year’s annual National Day reception, a significant diplomatic event, took place for the first time at the historic Chellah site.
The prestigious gathering brought together a distinguished array of Moroccan high-ranking officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and key partners from both the public and private sectors. The occasion served to underscore the nearly two and a half centuries of robust friendship and collaborative efforts between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco.
Morocco holds the distinct honor of being the first nation globally to recognize American independence, a pivotal act that laid the foundation for one of the United States’ most enduring diplomatic relationships.
This celebratory event powerfully highlighted the strength of the bilateral partnership across crucial sectors including diplomacy, security, trade, and investment. It also drew attention to the expanding cooperation in areas like innovation, infrastructure development, and broader economic growth.
The Embassy further emphasized the sustained American presence within Morocco, from the historic American Legation in Tangier, recognized as the oldest United States diplomatic property worldwide, to the recent inauguration of the new Consulate General headquarters in Casablanca. These landmarks symbolize a mutual dedication to forward-looking collaboration.
Speaking at the event, United States Ambassador to Rabat, Richard Duke Buchan III, articulated that the 250th anniversary of the United States offers a unique chance to celebrate “a partnership deeply rooted in shared history, fortified by mutual trust, and resolutely oriented towards the next 250 years.”
Ambassador Buchan further elaborated that this enduring partnership underscores a commitment to fortifying economic and human connections between the two nations. This includes supporting the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which positions the Moroccan Sahara as a vital hub for transatlantic partnership and diverse opportunities.
Adding another layer to the celebration, Morocco’s participation in the World Cup, hosted in the United States, serves as a compelling contemporary example of the profound human connections that continually strengthen the relationship between these two countries.
The evening culminated in a spectacular display of fireworks and drones, visually encapsulating the lasting friendship between the United States and Morocco, alongside their shared aspirations for the future.
