The inauguration proceedings commenced with the Constitutional Court’s official declaration of the presidential election results, presented from the podium in full ceremonial regalia. Moments later, the highly anticipated swearing-in moment arrived: Romuald Wadagni stepped forward, clad in a navy suit and tie, his right hand raised as he took the oath to “uphold and defend the Constitution of Benin” and vowed to “accept the consequences of perjury under law.”
A cannon salute echoed through the square as the crowd applauded the historic pledge. Following the oath, Wadagni was formally invested as Grand Master of National Orders, and the Chief of Staff presented him with the national flag, symbolizing his new mandate.
In his inaugural address, the newly sworn-in leader pledged to govern Benin with unwavering integrity, courage, and dedication, ensuring the rule of law and safeguarding fundamental freedoms. He also promised inclusive economic growth, declaring his commitment to a future where every family in the country benefits from prosperity.
On national security, Wadagni affirmed Benin’s resolve to remain steadfast against all threats to its stability. He emphasized that the nation would not tolerate any compromises on its safety or sovereignty.
A strong commitment to regional cooperation
The ceremony, held on the esplanade of the Palais des Congrès, drew notable attendees, including former Beninese presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, as well as 16 international delegations. Among the guests were the French minister for international partnerships and representatives from Benin’s neighboring nations—Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Niger, with whom relations have faced recent strains.
Addressing the assembled leaders, Wadagni warmly acknowledged their presence and underscored his administration’s determination to deepen regional collaboration. “Our shared destiny demands collective action,” he stated, highlighting the necessity of unity in addressing common challenges across West Africa.
