Senegal forms new government without pastef-les patriotes representation

Le Premier ministre sénégalais Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô

Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô of Senegal unveiled the composition of a new 30-member government on Monday evening. Notably, the new cabinet does not include representatives from the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, despite their significant majority in the National Assembly.

This executive reorganization takes place amidst a period of national political realignment, which has seen the integration of various technocratic and political figures into the government team. Hours before the official list was made public, former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had announced that his political formation would not be participating in this latest government.

Earlier, Ousmane Sonko had communicated that his party, PASTEF-Les Patriotes, had engaged in discussions with the President of the Republic. These exchanges, he stated, were conducted in a spirit of responsibility and in alignment with the commitments made by the party’s Executive Committee (COMEX), which Sonko reiterated upon his installation at the National Assembly.

Outlining the new team’s strategic direction, Prime Minister Lô characterized it as a “mission government with an obligation for results.” He emphasized that the administration would draw upon both political and technocratic foundations, while also placing significant importance on the inclusion of youth and women.

He further clarified that the government’s approach would be defined by a shift in methodology, focusing on institutional coherence and leveraging the expertise of both national talents and the Senegalese diaspora.

The new governmental structure sees the re-appointment of several key ministers from the preceding administration. These include Cheikh Diba, who retains the Economy portfolio; Cheikh Niane, continuing in Foreign Affairs; Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, remaining at Hydraulics and Sanitation; and Moustapha Guirassy, who stays on as Minister of National Education.

The Presidency of Senegal had previously shared details regarding the full government composition.

Additionally, Ibrahima Sy will continue as Minister of Health, Moussa Bala Fofana in Urban Planning, Yankhoba Diémé overseeing the Armed Forces, Déthié Fall in Infrastructure, and Bakary Sarr in Communication, all retaining their respective portfolios.

This governmental overhaul follows President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s decision on May 26 to appoint Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Prime Minister. Lô succeeds Ousmane Sonko, who was recently elected to preside over the Senegalese National Assembly.
