Senegal: Ousmane Sonko elected Speaker of the National Assembly
Days after his abrupt removal as Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko secured a decisive victory on Tuesday, securing 132 votes out of 133 cast to become Senegal’s new Speaker of the National Assembly.

Sonko, leader of the ruling Patriotic Africans of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) party, takes over from El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned last Sunday.

The appointment comes just hours after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the country’s new Prime Minister. Lô previously served as Minister in charge of monitoring and evaluating the National Transformation Program ‘Senegal 2050’ before being appointed Secretary-General of the Government.
