Senegal parliament speaker urges african parliamentary reform at upa meeting

The 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) provided a platform for critical discussions this June in Senegal. On the sidelines of the meeting, Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, held a key meeting with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the APU Executive Committee.

During the private discussion, Sonko underscored the urgent need to enhance the operational efficiency of the African Parliamentary Union. He outlined several reform proposals aimed at modernizing the organization’s structure and strengthening its role in shaping the continent’s political and institutional agenda. His vision includes boosting the union’s influence in major continental decisions and ensuring its recommendations align more closely with the African Union’s strategic priorities.

boosting continental governance through stronger cooperation

Sonko emphasized that greater synergy between the APU’s legislative outputs and the African Union’s policy frameworks could lead to more coherent governance across Africa. He believes this alignment will amplify the impact of continental initiatives aimed at fostering development and addressing the region’s pressing challenges—be they political, economic, or security-related.

a call for transformative change in african politics

In his remarks, the National Assembly President framed the meeting as part of a broader movement among African leaders to reinforce parliamentary cooperation. The goal is to build a more responsive and effective governance model that prioritizes the needs of African citizens and strengthens the continent’s collective voice on the global stage.
