Senegal political dialogue: sonko urges peace after government criticism

Ousmane Sonko, Senegal’s newly elected Assembly President, extended an olive branch to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Tuesday, urging a constructive political dialogue to avert further instability. Despite sharp policy disagreements, Sonko’s party, Pastef, has pledged not to destabilize the government.

Sonko questions new government’s legitimacy

Speaking publicly for the first time since his May 22 dismissal, Ousmane Sonko delivered sharp criticism of President Faye’s newly formed cabinet. “A nation is serious business, governance is serious business,” the Pastef leader declared during a Dakar press conference, arguing that Monday’s cabinet lacks “any structured political legitimacy.” He emphasized that institutional power dynamics must be respected, noting that Pastef controls 130 of the 165 Assembly seats.

Pastef commits to stability despite tensions

While maintaining his critique, Sonko made a strategic concession: his party will not seek to topple the government. “In 72 hours, Pastef could bring down this government if we wished. But we won’t. Instead, we’ll support them,” he stated. The Assembly President emphasized the need for national stability to reassure investors and prevent a repeat of recent political turbulence.

Call for peaceful resolution

Facing escalating tensions between former allies, Sonko issued a plea for “intelligent, constructive political dialogue.” “We must avoid repeating the country’s past crises,” he warned, referencing the violent protests that rocked Senegal between 2021 and 2024. While condemning alleged provocations against his supporters, Sonko urged calm among youth, declaring that “peace requires two willing parties.”
