Senegal: President Bassirou Diomaye Faye ends Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s term

A decree issued by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially terminated the term of Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister of Senegal. The move also dissolves the entire government, as announced by Oumar Samba Ba, Secretary-General of the Presidency.
“By decree number 2026-1128 dated May 22, 2026, President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye has ended the functions of Mr. Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister, and consequently, those of the ministers and secretaries of state. The outgoing government members are tasked with handling current affairs until further notice,” Oumar Samba Ba stated.
The decision comes amid escalating tensions between President Faye and his former mentor, Ousmane Sonko, who had previously been barred from running in the 2024 presidential election. Sonko, a prominent opposition figure against former President Macky Sall, had endorsed Faye as his replacement candidate.
