The 0-3 forfeiture against Morocco in the AFCON 2025 final has not only cost Senegal its championship but has also plunged African football into an unprecedented crisis of confidence. Clubs, pundits, and international media are united in their condemnation of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Reports confirm escalating backlash against the CAF’s ruling. According to AS, Egyptian club Pharco FC has declared an indefinite boycott of all tournaments organized by the CAF, protesting the handling of the situation. The club views the decision against Senegal as “unjust, politically motivated, and against the spirit of fair play.”
Beyond Pharco FC, numerous other Egyptian and Algerian clubs have voiced solidarity with Senegal, contemplating future boycotts of continental competitions. Prominent teams such as South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Tanzania’s Simba SC have labeled the verdict “disgraceful,” warning it could establish a perilous precedent for African football.
The CAF had previously ruled a 0-3 defeat for Senegal in the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco. The official judgment cited Senegal’s breach of regulations for abandoning the pitch in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco late in regular time.
The heart of the controversy lies in the match’s resumption after a 10-minute halt. Senegal returned, maintained their 1-0 lead through Pape Gueye’s extra-time goal, and even lifted the championship trophy in Rabat on January 18.
However, following a formal complaint from Morocco, the CAF unexpectedly altered the outcome, declaring Morocco 3-0 winners and awarding the host nation the championship title.
This ruling sent immediate shockwaves across the football world. L’Équipe described it as one of the most “bizarre and contentious” decisions in modern football history, while The Athletic highlighted its unprecedented nature within a continental championship.
Many football analysts have also questioned the legitimacy of the decision. They argued that if Senegal had indeed committed a serious infraction, the referee and match organizers should have halted the game or declared a forfeiture immediately, rather than waiting until after the final whistle to change the result following Morocco’s appeal.
The Senegalese Football Federation subsequently confirmed its intention to lodge an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and FIFA. African media outlets have even suggested that the Senegalese national team is considering withdrawing from CAF competitions due to what it perceives as unfair treatment.
This incident severely tarnishes the reputation of African football, especially given that the AFCON stands as the continent’s most prestigious national team tournament. Many fear that if this crisis persists, the prestige and competitive integrity of CAF-organized events could be significantly jeopardized in the coming years.
