Bamako’s Médine Market: Where Everything is Made and Sold

In the heart of Bamako, the vibrant market of Médine comes alive with a kaleidoscope of goods on offer. Adama Konaté, a seasoned bicycle trader from France, the US, and other countries, has set up shop here to not only sell his imported two-wheelers but also repair and assemble new ones.

Beyond bicycles, Konaté’s stall offers a wide range of other items, including vehicle accessories and even some agricultural equipment that can be hard to find elsewhere. His neighbor, Drissa Traoré, an artisan, sells various goods like fourneaux, trousseau items, and even broyeurs d’arachide made locally.

Traoré attributes his success to hard work and gratitude towards God. ‘I’ve been working here for over a year now, and I’m doing well financially,’ he says. ‘The prices of equipment vary depending on the model.’ He concludes by urging young people to show discipline in their work.

Fousseyni Sangaré, a vendor of agricultural equipment, notes that with each approaching rainy season, farmers come to acquire various farming tools like charrues, dabas, and other soil-work accessories.

Sangaré expresses his concern about the difficulties in delivering equipment to some rural areas due to security issues. Most of his equipment comes from the Koutiala region, and he thanks his loyal clients for their support despite the economic downturn.

Adama Konaté attributes the market’s current boom to the hydrocarbons crisis. ‘It’s been 27 years since I started this business,’ he says. ‘I offer a variety of models with prices that vary depending on the features.’ He believes the market is thriving due to the economic situation.
