On June 2, 2026, Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni embarked on an official state visit to Niamey, Niger, marking a significant step in fostering stronger ties between the two nations. Upon arrival at Diori Hamani International Airport, he received a warm welcome from his Nigerien counterpart, General Abdourahamane Tiani, symbolizing the thawing relations and mutual respect between Benin and Niger.

A formal welcome ceremony preceded a private meeting between the two heads of state at the Presidential Palace in Niamey. This was followed by an expanded working session involving delegations from both countries, focusing on bilateral interests, regional dynamics, and pressing international issues affecting both nations.

A joint communiqué issued after the discussions highlighted the long-standing bonds of friendship and cooperation uniting Benin and Niger. Both leaders underscored their shared determination to strengthen bilateral relations, prioritizing peace, security, and sustainable development for their citizens.

Security concerns took center stage during the talks. With the Sahel region facing persistent terrorist threats, Presidents Wadagni and Tiani reaffirmed their resolve to collaborate more closely in combating terrorism and cross-border criminal activities. They emphasized that enhanced cooperation is essential to safeguarding regional stability and advancing development initiatives across West Africa.

The two presidents also agreed to accelerate collaboration across political, economic, scientific, and cultural domains. Key among their decisions was the commitment to reopen the Benin-Niger border, which has been a longstanding point of contention. A joint expert committee has been tasked with identifying obstacles and proposing solutions within two weeks to facilitate this process.

At the conclusion of the visit, President Tiani expressed his appreciation for the visit, while President Wadagni praised the hospitality shown. The Beninese leader extended an official invitation to President Tiani for a return visit to Benin, an offer that was warmly accepted. The details of this reciprocal visit will be finalized through diplomatic channels, reflecting the shared commitment to solidifying a strategic partnership between the two countries.
