The initial batch of Burkinabè pilgrims has landed in Ouagadougou, marking the start of the return phase for the Hadj 2026. On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, 342 faithful touched down at the capital’s international airport, greeted by family and officials after weeks of spiritual devotion in Islam’s holy sites.
These travelers, having fulfilled the fifth pillar of Islam, returned with hearts full of gratitude and faces glowing with joy. Many wore traditional boubous, their expressions reflecting the deep fulfillment of their religious journey. Among them was Hadja Karidja Karambiri/Koné, visibly moved upon stepping off the plane.
« Mecca exceeded all expectations. This was my first time, and I’m truly overwhelmed with happiness. Everything went perfectly… We prayed fervently for peace and social cohesion to return to Burkina Faso », she shared.
The secretary general of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, Saïdou Sankara, conveyed the government’s satisfaction with the smooth execution of this year’s pilgrimage. No major incidents were reported, and he extended official gratitude to the returnees on behalf of the State.
« It’s a moment of immense joy to welcome our brothers and sisters back safely after completing their sacred duty. On behalf of the Prime Minister, we’ve come to greet them and offer our warmest congratulations. May this spiritual journey deepen their faith, and may all prayers made in Mecca be answered—for their families and our beloved nation », Sankara stated.

El Hadj Oumarou Zoungrana, speaking for the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina (FAIB), praised the flawless organization of the pilgrimage. He commended the steering committee for ensuring a successful journey for all participants.
The return flights will continue uninterrupted until every Burkinabè pilgrim is safely home, under the watchful coordination of authorities and organizers.
