Canary Islands Parliament honors outgoing Moroccan consul
The President of the Canary Islands Parliament, Astrid Pérez, met this Wednesday with Morocco’s outgoing Consul General in the Canary Islands, Fatiha El Kamouri, to recognize her contributions over a four-year term dedicated to strengthening institutional relations between Morocco and the Canary Islands.
During the meeting, Pérez expressed gratitude for El Kamouri’s efforts and emphasized the importance of sustained dialogue and cooperation between the two institutions. She also wished El Kamouri success in her next professional endeavor.
Fatiha El Kamouri, of Sahrawi origin, arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving as Morocco’s consul in Bilbao for six years, where she played a key role in fostering institutional relations and supporting the Moroccan community residing in the islands.
Local sources in the Canary Islands highlight the significant positive impact of El Kamouri’s work on strengthening bilateral relations between the regional government—led by Fernando Clavijo—and Morocco.
Clavijo’s unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for Western Sahara reflects alignment with Spain’s national diplomacy. This goes beyond mere diplomatic courtesy; it reflects a deep understanding of security, stability, and the substantial economic and trade benefits of closer ties.
Beyond high-level visits and the signing of multiple collaboration agreements across various sectors, Clavijo has hosted delegations from the Souss-Massa region in Las Palmas. Welcoming Karim Achengli and over 80 business representatives exemplifies this new dynamic, transforming political discourse into concrete actions.
This institutional rapprochement demonstrates that the Canary Islands are now seen as a natural partner in Morocco’s development, rejecting past attempts to divide the two regions across the Strait.
The collaboration spans numerous strategic sectors. The Canary Islands’ expertise in water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological research has found a receptive audience in Morocco’s southern provinces.
Businesses in both regions are actively pursuing joint ventures, proving that shared interest is the strongest foundation for lasting peace and shared prosperity.
Fatiha El Kamouri’s work over the past four years has been instrumental in making this possible.
