Chad uncover clandestine livestock slaughter ring in N’Djamena

Chad: authorities dismantle illegal slaughter network in N’Djamena

A joint operation led by the Ministry of Livestock, the Sanitary Police Coordination, and security forces has shut down an underground slaughter ring in Chad’s capital. During a raid in the Machaga district of the 8th arrondissement, authorities seized over 100 diseased cattle and 40 infected sheep—animals that posed a direct health threat to consumers. Investigators believe the livestock were purchased by an unnamed international NGO with local accomplices, intended for distribution as charitable gifts during the Tabaski celebrations.

Following the operation, Dr. Ousmane Yosko Souhoumi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Production, visited the site on May 28. Upon confirming the scale of the violation, he ordered immediate action: carcasses must be incinerated, surviving animals quarantined for veterinary treatment, and public health safeguards reinforced to prevent disease spread.

The crackdown highlights ongoing efforts to curb clandestine meat trade practices that endanger food safety standards across Chad. Authorities are urging citizens to report suspicious slaughter activities and rely only on certified sources for meat consumption.
