Chadian supreme court upholds masra’s 20-year sentence, “les transformateurs” decry political judgment

Chad’s highest judicial body, the Supreme Court, recently dismissed the appeal filed by Succès Masra, the former Prime Minister and influential leader of the opposition party “Les Transformateurs.” This decision, rendered on Thursday, May 21, definitively confirmed his 20-year prison sentence, a judgment that has ignited widespread outrage and profound disappointment among his dedicated supporters.

In an official communiqué, Les Transformateurs asserted that the Chadian justice system had squandered a crucial opportunity to make a positive historical impact by upholding the verdict originally issued against their president last year.

The party vehemently condemned the inherently political nature of the proceedings, emphasizing that “this ruling by the Supreme Court once again corroborates the deeply political essence of President Masra’s arbitrary detention, which has now spanned 371 days.” They contend that the objective behind this prolonged incarceration is to systematically sideline a prominent political adversary from the national stage.

Furthermore, the opposition movement strongly criticized the judiciary for disregarding numerous international calls demanding Masra’s release, denouncing the perceived injustice, and reiterating fundamental principles of the rule of law. Concerns have also escalated regarding the health of the former Chadian Prime Minister, with his adherents reporting a “considerable deterioration” in his condition.

Masra had been found guilty of criminal association and complicity in murder following the tragic events of the Mandakao massacre, which occurred in May 2025 within the Logone Occidental province. With all national legal avenues now exhausted, the legal team representing the opposition figure is reportedly preparing to pursue appeals before international judicial bodies.
