N’Djamena recently witnessed a landmark cultural event as the National Museum of Chad, operating under the Ministry of Tourist Development, Culture, and Handicrafts, proudly presented its very first ‘Night of Museums’ on Monday, May 18, 2026. This special occasion coincided with the International Museum Day, aiming to highlight and valorize Chad’s rich cultural heritage.
From 8 PM onwards, a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere enveloped the museum grounds. Guests were greeted at the entrance by the National Ballet of Chad, whose captivating traditional dances offered an immediate and colorful immersion into the nation’s profound choreographic traditions.
“It’s truly spectacular to experience Chadian traditional dance through the ‘Night of Museums.’ I’ve just stepped inside to explore the wonders of the National Museum, and I’m already mesmerized by these artistic displays,” shared Anne Marie-Thérèse, a visitor clearly delighted by the unfolding spectacle.
The nocturnal exploration was thoughtfully structured, allowing attendees to freely wander through the permanent exhibition spaces. Visitors engaged with a diverse and interactive program that included guided demonstrations of art objects, passionate storytelling of traditional tales by griots and museum guides, screenings of documentaries illuminating Chad’s tangible and intangible heritage, and various other artistic performances.
For Mbaibaidoh John Innocent, the esteemed director of the National Ballet, this initiative represents an extraordinary opportunity for cultural promotion.
“Our traditional dances are an essential component of our intangible heritage. We adorned the stage with artifacts our ancestors used daily. This event offers a unique chance for the younger generation to discover these objects, each imbued with history. We sincerely hope the ‘Night of Museums’ can be held at least three times a year, as it is an unparalleled moment for celebrating and showcasing our culture.”
The event also garnered international recognition, notably with the presence of the French Ambassador to Chad and their delegation, underscoring global interest in efforts to safeguard and promote Chadian cultural heritage.
