Chad’s vice-premier minister assesses local governance in Moundou

In a proactive move to strengthen territorial governance, Chad’s Vice-Prime Minister Limane Mahamat is currently conducting a two-day evaluation mission in Moundou, Logone Occidental province. The visit, which began on May 19, 2026, brings together key local and national stakeholders to address pressing administrative and security challenges.

Key discussions focus on local challenges and solutions

The working sessions, held at the Logone Occidental provincial council headquarters from May 20 to 21, convene regional leaders including government delegates, prefects, mayors, provincial council presidents, and elected officials from both chambers of parliament. These discussions aim to provide firsthand insights into the region’s most critical needs.

Welcoming the delegation, Dago Yacoub, government delegate for Logone Occidental, emphasized the mission’s importance. “This gathering will help national authorities better understand the ground realities and urgent priorities of southern Chad,” he stated. The initiative is designed to ensure that policy decisions reflect the actual conditions faced by local populations.

Security and agricultural concerns take center stage

During the opening remarks, Vice-Prime Minister Limane Mahamat highlighted the southern region’s vital role in Chad’s economy, describing it as the nation’s “agricultural breadbasket” due to its contribution to food security. However, he also underscored persistent security threats that threaten stability, including violent clashes between herders and farmers, intercommunal tensions, and the illegal arms trade.

“These issues erode social cohesion and deepen divisions within communities,” Mahamat noted. He stressed that immediate, coordinated action is needed to restore peace and foster sustainable development in the region.

Strengthening local governance and intergovernmental ties

The mission reflects Chad’s commitment to enhancing local governance and bridging the gap between central authorities and territorial administrations. By engaging directly with provincial leaders, the government aims to implement targeted solutions that address the unique challenges of southern Chad while reinforcing national unity.
