In a surprising turn of events, President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo has announced he will not attend the high-level United Nations Security Council meeting in New York scheduled for July 22, where he was expected to preside over discussions on natural resource governance as a cornerstone for peace, security, and prosperity.
This decision comes despite the July 13 Arria-formula meeting held in New York under the leadership of State Minister for Foreign Affairs Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, which was meant to set the stage for the President’s engagement in New York.
