Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham side missed a prime opportunity to secure their Premier League status, failing to capitalize on a crucial match-point. Succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea on the 37th matchday, the North London club must now await the final matchday on Sunday to determine their fate in England’s top flight.

Goals from Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos proved decisive against the Lilywhites, despite a consolation goal from Richarlison. It was a frustrating setback for De Zerbi, who nonetheless defended his squad’s performance: « We forged an early significant chance with Tel, but Sanchez made a crucial save. We remained competitive until the second goal, which resulted from a rather naive loss of possession. I believe we delivered a commendable display, even if we ultimately lost. »

The Italian tactician immediately shifted his focus to the upcoming challenge, with a pivotal home fixture against Everton just days away. « This is no time to dwell excessively on this particular fixture. We must concentrate on the next, all-important game, played before our loyal supporters. With our inherent qualities, unwavering character, collective pride, and sheer courage, we must respond emphatically. I remain confident, given the quality of today’s performance. »

Tottenham currently holds a two-point advantage over West Ham United, who will host Leeds United on the season’s concluding day. Should teams finish level on points, goal difference will be the deciding factor, with a clear advantage for the North London club (-10 compared to -22). De Zerbi thus still holds their destiny in his own hands, but with absolutely no margin for error come Sunday.
