Diplomatic breakthrough as Morocco and France elevate bilateral ties in Rabat summit

A landmark meeting between Moroccan and French delegations in Rabat signals a pivotal shift in bilateral relations, as highlighted by the heads of government from both nations during this morning’s opening session.
Established in 1996 under King Hassan II, these high-level consultations were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent diplomatic tensions. The resumption of this forum reflects a renewed commitment to partnership.
« A transformative chapter in our shared history »
Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch emphasized that the strengthened partnership formalized during the French president’s 2024 state visit has inaugurated « a transformative chapter in our shared history » and set an ambitious trajectory for future collaboration.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu echoed this sentiment, describing the talks as a « pivotal moment » as both nations seek to « elevate their bilateral relationship to new heights ».
Over a dozen cooperation agreements inked
Following bilateral ministerial discussions, Lecornu and Akhannouch addressed critical areas including security cooperation and counterterrorism efforts. The agenda also included preparations for a potential royal visit to France, potentially culminating in a landmark bilateral treaty to redefine the Paris-Rabat partnership.
The plenary session concluded with the signing of more than ten cooperation instruments, including conventions, declarations of intent, and framework agreements.
