Gabon boosts sustainable mobility: electric vehicle imports and sales now VAT-exempt

Gabon is significantly enhancing its fiscal incentives to promote sustainable transportation. The recently adopted Rectified Finance Law (LFR) 2026 introduces a crucial exemption from Value Added Tax (VAT) for both the importation and commercialization of electric vehicles. This measure is a key addition to the General Tax Code, expanding the range of transactions that benefit from VAT relief. By lowering the tax burden associated with acquiring these eco-friendly vehicles, the government aims to accelerate their adoption in the national market and encourage economic operators to invest in this nascent sector.

The revised Article 210 of the General Tax Code, as amended by the LFR 2026, explicitly lists the “importation and commercialization of electric vehicles” among operations now exempt from VAT. This provision applies equally to vehicles entering Gabonese territory and those intended for sale within the local market. From a customs perspective, this reform is designed to reduce the overall cost of importing these vehicles, although the legislation does not include a specific exemption for customs duties. The primary fiscal advantage focuses squarely on VAT, identified as the main lever to facilitate access to electric vehicles.

Driving Sustainable Mobility

Gabonese authorities are clearly demonstrating their commitment to accelerating the transition towards cleaner mobility through attractive tax schemes. The overarching goal is to make electric vehicles more competitive against traditional internal combustion engine models, stimulate the growth of a domestic electromobility market, and progressively decrease greenhouse gas emissions linked to transportation. This strategic direction aligns with a broader environmental policy, further underscored by the introduction of a carbon contribution and new environmental taxes also stipulated in the same Rectified Finance Law.

This initiative sends a strong signal to dealerships, investors, and consumers about the government’s dedication to supporting the energy transition. The VAT exemption is expected to significantly enhance the appeal of electric vehicles, while simultaneously contributing to the modernization of the national automotive fleet. Furthermore, this reform could foster the future development of essential infrastructure, particularly charging networks, thereby reinforcing Gabon’s commitment to greener economic growth and a development model that balances performance with environmental preservation.
