Ivorian skills forum 2026: aligning training with economic demand

Abidjan — The second edition of the International Skills and Competencies Forum (FIMEC) kicks off Tuesday in Abidjan, bringing together top decision-makers to place vocational training at the heart of Côte d’Ivoire’s economic transformation.

Government leads push to bridge skills gaps

Under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, the two-day event unites government leaders, ambassadors, international partners, business executives, researchers, and vocational training stakeholders around a shared ambition: to turn skills development into a catalyst for jobs, competitiveness, and sustainable growth.

The forum is organized by the National Agency for Vocational Training (AGEFOP), operating under the Ministry of Employment, Social Protection, and Vocational Training. Its theme — “Skills, Employment, and Economic Transformation in Africa: The Strategic Role of Vocational Training” — reflects a sweeping policy shift that integrates training, decent employment, and worker protection into a unified national strategy.

Reform drives integrated human capital strategy

This reorientation was spearheaded by President Alassane Ouattara and championed by Minister Adama Kamara, who has made vocational training a cornerstone of the 2026–2030 National Development Plan. The plan positions human capital as the backbone of Côte d’Ivoire’s structural economic transformation.

With technical and financial partners pledging over $80 billion to support the plan, the development of relevant skills has become essential to convert these investments into inclusive growth, sustainable jobs, and shared prosperity.

Forum agenda tackles emerging labor market challenges

Over two days, participants will engage in high-level panels, masterclasses, technical workshops, skill demonstrations, and networking sessions designed to foster collaboration between learners and employers.

Key discussion areas include:

  • Preparing the workforce for artificial intelligence and digital transformation
  • Building green skills for a sustainable economy
  • Strengthening soft skills like communication and adaptability
  • Anticipating evolving job profiles and market demands

The forum will also highlight success stories of Ivorian men and women whose careers were transformed through vocational training, showcasing how targeted skills programs enhance employability, support entrepreneurship, and align talent with business needs.

From policy to practice

The event signals a decisive move toward closing the skills gap, ensuring that Côte d’Ivoire’s workforce is not only ready for today’s jobs but also equipped to thrive in the industries of tomorrow.
