Grandchildren of Serigne Touba file defamation complaint against Ousmane Sonko in Dakar
Legal proceedings have been initiated following a formal complaint lodged on July 14, 2026 and promptly registered the next day at the prosecutor’s office of the Dakar High Court. The document, signed by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, targets remarks made by the Pastef party leader during the inauguration of his party’s new national headquarters.
The plaintiffs argue that allegations of “dirty money entering the holy city of Touba” constitute a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of the municipality and its residents. In their submission, they emphasize that the city was founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba on the principles of integrity, unwavering faith, and strict religious adherence.
Their legal team has demanded an immediate police investigation, including the summoning of Ousmane Sonko to clarify his statements and present tangible evidence supporting his claims. Additionally, they have pledged to provide investigators with video footage, transcribed statements, and press clippings to bolster their case. Should the inquiry confirm the baseless nature of these accusations, the collective is urging the prosecution to pursue criminal charges for defamation and the spread of false information, both of which are criminal offenses under the Senegalese Penal Code.
This legal move unfolds against a backdrop of heightened political tensions in Senegal, where relations between the central government and influential religious factions—particularly in Touba, the spiritual heart of the Mouride brotherhood—remain under intense scrutiny. The management of financial flows and the rhetoric of political leaders concerning the capital of Mouridism continue to be a highly sensitive issue. The Dakar prosecutor now faces the task of evaluating the admissibility of the complaint and determining the next investigative steps, a decision that has already sparked discussions within Mouride circles.
