New legal challenge targets Ousmane Sonko over Touba comments
The controversy surrounding Ousmane Sonko’s remarks about Touba has escalated into the courts. A descendant of Serigne Touba has formally petitioned the Prosecutor of the Republic at the Dakar High Court, demanding an immediate judicial investigation.
On 14 July 2026, Serigne Modou Maroun Niang, a Senegalese businessman and grandson of the founder of the holy city, filed the complaint. He argues that Sonko’s public statement—alleging that “dirty money” entered Touba—seriously harms the city’s reputation and the dignity of its residents.
In his view, Touba, a spiritual center built on the principles of faith, integrity, justice, and diligence inherited from Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, cannot be associated with such allegations. The complaint calls for Sonko to clarify his remarks under oath and provide evidence to support them.
The petition also requests a thorough investigation to determine the accuracy of the claims. If substantiated, the complainant seeks legal action for potential offenses including defamation, spreading false information, or other violations under Senegalese law.
Serigne Modou Maroun Niang claims to possess substantial evidence, including video recordings, transcripts of the disputed statements, and media publications documenting the remarks.
This legal move follows intense political debate over Sonko’s comments and could lead to further judicial proceedings if the prosecution chooses to act on the complaint.
