OGC Nice battles for Ligue 1 survival this week. The first leg of the promotion/relegation playoff kicks off Tuesday night in Saint-Étienne. At Geoffroy-Guichard, the Aiglons must secure a result without suspended striker Elye Wahi and without their traveling fans.

Standing alone against the world. That’s the unenviable position Nice find themselves in as they head into this two-legged playoff. The Côte d’Azur club’s very future in France’s top flight hangs in the balance, yet they’ll face both legs without their passionate supporters behind them.

An already challenging season has heaped additional pressure on the players. The absence of Elye Wahi, serving a suspension for the first leg, combined with the physical toll of last week’s Coupe de France final defeat to Lens, leaves precious little time to recover ahead of facing a resurgent AS Saint-Étienne side.

Empty stands await Nice on both legs

The team will travel to Saint-Étienne on Tuesday with their fans barred from making the short trip to the Loire department. And when the second leg returns to the Allianz Riviera on Friday, the stadium will be closed to all spectators. The Aiglons will need to find an extra gear in an eerily silent environment.

Mounting challenges pile pressure on Nice

The club faces a perfect storm of obstacles. Beyond Wahi’s suspension, three key players—Wahi, Diouf and Mendy—remain with their national teams until Friday. The preparation period has been cramped by international call-ups, while Saint-Étienne arrive with a squad built for Ligue 1 after last summer’s reinforcements, despite their relegation.

Nice, meanwhile, saw their ambitions of Champions League football slip away, leaving the club in a far weaker position than their Loire rivals.

Can Nice turn the tide?

The Gym have taken 26 defeats in 50 matches since August 6th. While redemption is possible if they channel the spirit shown in last Friday’s draw with Lens and eliminate costly individual errors, optimism remains thin. Club officials insist the focus remains on securing the future for 200 employees and giving veteran defender Dante a dignified Ligue 1 send-off.
