Mali and Morocco unite diaspora to drive productive investments

The second edition of the International Diaspora Forum (FID) is underway at the International Conference Center of Bamako (CICB) from July 16 to 18, 2026. This year’s theme, ‘Malian diaspora and productive investments: building a strong Mali for sustainable development’, underscores the nation’s commitment to leveraging its global community as a catalyst for economic growth.

The Kingdom of Morocco, serving as the guest of honor, highlights the shared vision between both countries in harnessing diaspora potential. The event’s opening ceremony was led by Prime Minister, General Abdoulaye Maïga, who emphasized the strategic importance of integrating overseas Malians into the nation’s development agenda.

Morocco’s Ambassador to Mali, Driss Isbayène, pointed out that both nations grapple with the challenge of retaining and motivating their diasporas to invest in high-impact sectors. With six million Moroccans abroad—a figure mirroring Mali’s diaspora—the ambassador noted that ‘success hinges on fostering deeper ties and channeling investments toward economically viable opportunities’.

Among the attendees was Alimatou Diallo, a Senegalese resident in Mali, who shared her experience: ‘Since settling here, I’ve never felt isolated. Initiatives like this empower us to grow and promote our products globally.’

Expertise and opportunity: a call to action

Habib Sylla, Chair of the High Council of Malians Abroad, recalled the President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta’s, stirring appeal during the first FID: ‘Invest in your homeland without hesitation. My door remains open to support you.’

Sylla described this commitment as ‘the strongest signal diaspora members could hope for,’ urging overseas Malians to focus on high-potential sectors. Meanwhile, Minister of Malians Abroad and African Integration, Mossa Ag Attaher, framed the diaspora’s role as ‘the heartbeat of the nation’s destiny.’

He described Diaspora Hub not merely as a digital platform but as a meticulously designed digital infrastructure to permanently link Malians abroad with their country’s institutions and developmental goals.

Building a resilient and unified Mali

Prime Minister Maïga framed the forum as a cornerstone of Mali’s broader strategy to achieve economic, social, and institutional transformation. He stated: ‘This vision aims to build a sovereign, prosperous, resilient, and united nation by mobilizing all talents, including those of our diaspora.’

He further emphasized that this ambition aligns with the Alliance of Sahel States, which fosters regional economic integration, solidarity, and mutually beneficial cooperation. The Malian diaspora, Maïga asserted, is poised to play a pivotal role, bridging Mali with the wider Sahel region and the global community through expertise, networks, and investment capacity.
