Tom Saintfiet, the Belgian football coach who has led the Mali national team since August 2024, has announced his immediate departure from the position. The decision comes at a critical time for the West African nation, where escalating political turmoil and intensified security threats, including jihadist and Tuareg rebel offensives, have created an increasingly volatile environment.
In a heartfelt statement shared on his Facebook profile on April 27, 2026, Saintfiet reflected on his tenure, saying: “Today marks the end of my mission as head coach of the Mali national A team. It has been a journey of pride and dedication, even in the face of challenging circumstances. Now is the time for me to pursue a new professional challenge.”
Saintfiet’s legacy: a resilient team under pressure
Despite the difficult conditions, Saintfiet’s leadership guided Mali through a strong run in international competition. Under his guidance, the team lost just two of 17 matches, including a narrow defeat to Sénégal in the quarterfinals of the recent African Cup of Nations (0-1). This performance was particularly notable given Mali’s precarious starting position in World Cup qualifiers.
Saintfiet added: “In these exceptionally challenging times that Mali is facing, my deepest thoughts go out to the Malian people and the nation as a whole. I send a message of compassion, solidarity, and unity. Football is, above all, a sport that unites, and I hope it continues to carry values of peace and hope for Mali.”
What’s next for Malian football?
Tom Saintfiet, who was previously linked to the Ghana national team before Carlos Queiroz was appointed, has now set his sights on new opportunities. His departure follows his predecessor Éric Chelle’s stint and comes as the Malian Football Federation seeks to rebuild under fresh leadership.
The Federation’s president, Mahazou dit Baba Cissé, publicly acknowledged Saintfiet’s contributions, praising his commitment and results. A call for applications has been issued to find a suitable successor to lead the Aigles du Mali forward in future competitions.
