Massive displacement in Téra as armed groups pressure western Niger

Local reports indicate a significant wave of migration is currently overwhelming the commune of Téra in western Niger. The town and its surrounding areas are witnessing a surge in population as residents from southern villages in the department have been arriving in large numbers since late last month.

The administrative area of Diagourou is reportedly being deserted. Multiple sources state that militants from Jnim (the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims) issued an ultimatum to the inhabitants of approximately thirty villages, forcing them to flee. Located just ten kilometers from the garrison town of Téra—which houses Defense Zone No. 9—this region on the right bank of the Niger River sits within the volatile “three borders” zone (Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger). This territory is caught in the crossfire of both Jnim and the Islamic State in the Sahel (EIS).

Precarious living conditions for the displaced

Testimonies from the ground describe a dire situation for those arriving in Téra. Many families, including women and children, are forced to live in the open air, occupying vacant lots or relying on the generosity of host families while facing extreme vulnerability.

While precise statistics on this latest wave of displacement are currently unavailable, the villages within the Diagourou commune are known to be home to thousands of individuals, suggesting a humanitarian crisis of considerable scale.
