Moroccan and spanish security leaders honored in Rabat for vital cooperation

On Thursday in Rabat, Abdellatif Hammouchi, who leads both the National Security and Territorial Surveillance agencies, extended a warm welcome to a senior delegation from the Spanish Civil Guard. The delegation, headed by Major General Luis Peláez Piñeiro, the Director of Intelligence, was on an official mission to Morocco.

This gathering underscored the exceptional level of security collaboration between Moroccan and Spanish services, as detailed in a statement from the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN). This robust partnership stands as a benchmark in global counter-terrorism efforts and the relentless fight against transnational crime.

During the visit, several high-ranking officials from the DGSN and the Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) were awarded prestigious Spanish decorations. These honors, decreed by the Spanish Minister of Interior, recognized their crucial contributions to enhancing operational cooperation and technical assistance between Morocco and Spain.

The DGSN statement highlighted these accolades as concrete evidence of the profound strategic alliance between Morocco and Spain. They signify Madrid’s explicit recognition of the professionalism demonstrated by Moroccan security leaders in confronting shared threats effectively.

During the ceremony, Major General Peláez Piñeiro characterized Morocco as an “indispensable strategic partner” in the ongoing battle against terrorism and organized crime. He lauded the advanced bilateral security cooperation, which is essential in addressing escalating regional and international challenges.

These recent awards build upon previous high-level recognitions. Abdellatif Hammouchi, for instance, has been honored with the Grand Cross of Merit of the Spanish Civil Guard, its highest distinction. Furthermore, in 2014, he received the Cross of Police Merit with Red Distinction, acknowledging his pivotal role in forging an exemplary security partnership between Morocco and Spain.
