Moroccan rapper mehdi black wind detained amid calls for release

Moroccan artist El Mahdi Lyoubi, widely recognized by his stage name «Mehdi Black Wind», was recently apprehended by authorities and is currently incarcerated in a Casablanca prison. A public statement advocating for his immediate freedom has been widely circulated.

Questions are emerging regarding whether this detention is politically motivated. The Moroccan public prosecutor’s office brought rapper El Mahdi Lyoubi, 34, before a tribunal for immediate appearance on Wednesday. Sources close to his support committee indicate that Lyoubi, who has resided in France for nearly a decade, was issued a travel prohibition at Rabat airport on Friday as he prepared to depart for France. He subsequently received a summons from the Casablanca judicial police on Monday and was placed under arrest. The precise reasons behind the Moroccan rapper’s apprehension remain a central point of inquiry.

detained for his critical perspectives?

While Moroccan authorities have yet to formally disclose the specific charges against Mehdi Black Wind, speculation suggests the rapper’s detention may stem from his political views. This hypothesis is strongly put forth by those behind the public appeal for El Mahdi Lyoubi’s release. Within independent artistic circles, the rapper and filmmaker is recognized for his incisive lyrical commentary on Moroccan societal issues and disparities, a factor many believe is central to his current predicament.

«Current information indicates his arrest is connected to his artistic expressions and content shared on social media platforms,» reads the published statement urging his «immediate liberation.»

More than 700 cultural personalities, including Moroccan filmmaker Faouzi Bensaidi and French actresses Adèle Haenel and Aïssa Maïga, endorsed a declaration on Wednesday, condemning his incarceration and demanding his freedom. The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) has also publicly called for his release and an «end to policies restricting critical voices,» as stated in their Tuesday communiqué.

Lyoubi appeared before a judge at the Casablanca Court of First Instance on Wednesday. The hearing was postponed until July 22 to allow him to prepare his defense, a necessity compounded by a month-long lawyers’ strike in Morocco.
