Morocco UAE strategic ties: a model of pragmatic cooperation for shared progress

Morocco and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have forged an exemplary model of strategic partnership, underpinned by deep historical ties established decades ago by the late King Hassan II of Morocco and the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of the UAE.

This enduring alliance is distinguished by a shared vision, reciprocal political backing, and a diversified economic collaboration that addresses critical global challenges. The bond between the two nations is further strengthened by frequent high-level exchanges, with leaders meeting whenever regional or international developments demand decisive action.

On June 2, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, hosted King Mohammed VI at his official residence in Rabat for a private visit. The meeting provided a platform for the two heads of state to exchange perspectives on pressing international issues, with a particular focus on developments in the Gulf and Middle East regions. The gathering underscored the unbreakable fraternal ties that bind not only the two nations but also their respective royal families.

The partnership between Morocco and the UAE is built on a robust foundation established in December 2023. This framework is designed to convert their complementary strengths into a dynamic and sustainable synergy, elevating their economic, commercial, industrial, and investment relations to match the depth of their political and social connections. Grounded in unwavering mutual trust, both countries are committed to advancing pragmatic cooperation that serves their collective interests and fosters shared development.

The collaboration is driving the creation of innovative operational models tailored to their strategic goals. A key priority is supporting high-value projects through financial mobilization, public-private partnerships, and strategic investments. Among the sectors targeted is food security, with initiatives exploring joint ventures with the Office chérifien des phosphates (OCP) to enhance fertilizer production. Additionally, the partnership is set to launch major projects in tourism and real estate, particularly along the Mediterranean coast and in regions like Dakhla and Tarfaya. Reconstruction efforts in areas affected by the Al Haouz earthquake are also a focal point.

Politically, Morocco has consistently emphasized the importance of security and stability in the Gulf region. During a recent escalation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, Morocco took a firm stance by publicly condemning Iran’s aggressive actions against Gulf states. The solidarity between Morocco and the UAE was further reinforced when King Mohammed VI held a telephone conversation with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to reaffirm Morocco’s full support for the UAE.
