Nantes match abandoned: LFP sanctions and Toulouse’s Ligue 1 climb
France’s top football governing body has closed the case on the abandoned FC Nantes vs Toulouse match (0-0) from the final matchday of Ligue 1. No replay will occur, and Nantes climbs the standings due to the decision, despite it not being the outcome they anticipated.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) confirmed on May 27 that the abandoned match between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC at the Stade de la Beaujoire would not be replayed. The governing body’s decision to uphold the 0-0 scoreline recorded at the 22nd minute, rather than award Nantes a 3-0 forfeit victory, came as a mild surprise.
For Toulouse, this outcome lifts them to 9th place in the league, overtaking Lorient. With 45 points—tied with Lorient but ahead due to a superior goal difference (3 vs -1)—this marks the club’s best-ever finish since RedBird Capital took over its ownership. The decision ensures Toulouse’s upward trajectory continues, even though a 3-0 forfeit would not have allowed them to surpass Strasbourg in 8th with 53 points.
The LFP’s statement was brief but decisive: “Following review of the investigation report, the Commission has officially confirmed the score recorded at the time of the match’s definitive abandonment (0-0).” Sanctions were also handed down to FC Nantes for the pitch invasions and disturbances that cut short the season finale.
Empty stadium, no sporting penalties
Recall that disgruntled supporters launched flares onto the field, prompting dozens of masked ultras to storm the pitch in protest against the club’s leadership. Security personnel were overwhelmed as the protesters targeted the Loire Stand—a section traditionally home to FC Nantes’ ultras, including the Brigade Loire faction. The LFP’s sanctions included a one-match closed-door order for the Beaujoire stadium and a two-match closure of the Loire Stand. While Nantes begins its Ligue 2 campaign without fan support, the club avoided harsher penalties, such as point deductions, which had loomed as a possibility.
