Nantes handed match behind closed doors after 0-0 draw with Toulouse confirmed
The professional football league’s disciplinary body has ratified the goalless outcome between Nantes and Toulouse while imposing sanctions on the Canaries, now relegated to Ligue 2.
Final ruling on the controversial match
Following thorough examination of the incident report, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) disciplinary committee confirmed the 0-0 score that stood at the time of match abandonment between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC on the final day of the Ligue 1 season. The committee also handed down significant sanctions against Nantes for the pitch invasion and smoke bomb incident.
In their official statement, the LFP declared: “After careful review of the investigation report, the committee has definitively ratified the score recorded on the pitch at the time of definitive match abandonment (0-0). Additionally, the committee imposes the following sanction: one closed-door match at the Stade de la Beaujoire, followed by a two-match closure of the Loire stand.”
Chronology of the fateful May 17 encounter
The chaos unfolded during Nantes’ already relegated state in the 34th matchday fixture against Toulouse. With supporters already aware of their team’s demotion to Ligue 2, smoke bombs were launched and the pitch was invaded by fans from the Loire stand. After temporary restoration of order by riot police, referee Stéphanie Frappart ultimately abandoned the match “on prefectural order for safety reasons.”
As Nantes prepares for their return to Ligue 2, they’ll face their first home game without spectators, facing the consequences of their supporters’ actions during the final league fixture.
