Nantes vs Toulouse league 1 finale abandoned after supporter pitch invasion
Nantes’ final home match of the season ends abruptly following crowd disturbances at Stade de la Beaujoire
The highly anticipated final match of the 2025-2026 Ligue 1 season between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC was abandoned in dramatic fashion on Sunday evening at the Stade de la Beaujoire. The game, which held crucial implications for both club standings and relegation battles, was halted at the 22-minute mark following a chaotic pitch invasion by Nantes supporters.
The match was called off after a crisis meeting involving club officials, the Loire-Atlantique prefecture representative, national police authorities, Ligue de Football Professionnel delegate Olivier Chovaux, and referee Stéphanie Frappart. Following their conference, officials confirmed the abandonment was a definitive decision based on security concerns.
Frappart described the situation as «unacceptable and dangerous, with supporters storming the pitch accompanied by pyrotechnic devices and object-throwing incidents». After initially attempting to restore order, both teams were forced back to their locker rooms as violence escalated. The referee noted that coach Vahid Halilhodzic had to be physically restrained from confronting the invading supporters.
Minister of Sports condemns violence
Sports Minister Marina Ferrari swiftly reacted to the disturbances, issuing a statement declaring: «The scenes of violence witnessed moments ago during the FC Nantes-Toulouse match are completely unacceptable in both sport and our Republic. I strongly condemn these acts and offer my full support to the players and peaceful supporters who attended the match. The prefect’s decision to abandon the game was necessary. We cannot tolerate such behavior.
The rapid intervention by stadium staff and law enforcement was commendable. Every responsible party must now take action to identify and sanction those responsible for these violent acts with the utmost severity.»
The stadium was subsequently evacuated following further pyrotechnic discharges. Nantes, currently occupying the 17th position in the league table, will compete in Ligue 2 next season after today’s abandonment sealed their relegation fate.
