N’Djamena: off-duty officer opens fire on traffic police, injuring two
A shocking act of violence erupted around 5 PM near the Goudjé Barrière roundabout in N’Djamena, Tchad, as traffic police officers worked diligently to manage the flow of vehicles and prevent significant congestion.
Initial accounts indicate that the driver of a Toyota Corolla, equipped with tinted windows, attempted to disregard traffic directives and force his way through the regulated zone. A traffic brigade officer then intervened, seeking to ensure compliance with the established traffic control measures, which quickly escalated into a heated confrontation.
The individual, identified as an active police officer who had recently been removed from his post at the 3rd arrondissement commissariat, allegedly brandished a pistol. He reportedly fired a warning shot into the air before discharging his weapon directly at the officers. Two agents sustained gunshot wounds, one of whom was struck in the ear. Fortunately, police sources have confirmed that their injuries are not life-threatening.
During the intense incident, officers managed to subdue the assailant and confiscate his firearm. However, before being fully apprehended, the individual also reportedly inflicted a knife wound to the forehead of another officer, right in front of the Goudjé Barrière roundabout.
The injured officers received immediate medical attention, being swiftly transported to a healthcare facility. Their condition is being closely monitored, though initial reports offer reassurance regarding the victims who suffered gunshot wounds.
The attacker was subsequently handcuffed and taken into custody at the Police Secours premises, under the jurisdiction of the General Directorate of Police. Several officers present during the event noted that the assailant appeared to be in an intoxicated state at the time.
A thorough investigation has been launched to ascertain the precise circumstances surrounding this disturbing attack, which has understandably caused considerable alarm among both commuters and law enforcement personnel present at the scene.
