On Thursday in Ankara, the collaborative efforts between Niger and Türkiye reached a significant milestone during the official visit of Nigerien President, General Abdourahamane Tiani. This landmark trip, the first for the Nigerien head of state outside the African continent since assuming leadership, culminated in the formalization of numerous accords encompassing vital areas like security, economic development, healthcare, education, and diplomatic relations.
Following extensive discussions at the presidential palace, Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abdourahamane Tiani formally endorsed several cooperative frameworks. These included a protocol specifically for higher education spanning 2026-2030, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Commercial Commission (JETCO), an agreement detailing the management of the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, and a memorandum outlining diplomatic collaboration.
The Turkish President underscored the shared commitment to broadening bilateral collaboration across pivotal sectors such as defense, energy, mining, agriculture, trade, and investment. He further unveiled plans for a new mechanism designed to foster business opportunities and strengthen economic ties between Ankara and Niamey.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s unwavering dedication to supporting African nations grappling with security challenges, particularly within the Sahel region. He spoke of enhanced cooperation in military training and the exchange of intelligence expertise, emphasizing that Ankara’s engagement with Africa is fundamentally built upon principles of mutual respect, partner equality, and reciprocal benefits.
The Turkish leader also highlighted a range of accomplishments within Niger, prominently featuring the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, various irrigation and rural development initiatives, and the educational endeavors spearheaded by the Maarif Foundation. He noted that approximately 500 Nigerien students are currently pursuing advanced studies in Türkiye.
For his part, Abdourahamane Tiani lauded the evolving relationship, describing it as strategically vital for Niger. He recalled the substantial growth in ties between the two nations since President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Niger in 2013. The Nigerien President further acknowledged Ankara’s crucial support in combating armed groups across the Sahel, asserting that this collaboration has significantly bolstered Niger’s stability and security capabilities.
