Olympique Lyonnais requests postponement of Toulouse fixture ahead of Champions League playoffs
Olympique Lyonnais (OL) has formally requested the French Football League (LFP) to postpone their opening Ligue 1 match against Toulouse FC, scheduled for August 22, should the club qualify for the Champions League playoffs. The request underscores OL’s commitment to prioritizing their European ambitions over domestic league commitments at this critical juncture.
The Lyon-based club resumed training on June 29 with a single objective in mind: preparing for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, slated for August 4 or 5 (first leg) and August 11 (return leg). Success in these matches would propel OL into the playoffs, scheduled to take place between the two Ligue 1 matchdays.
In their formal request, OL’s management highlighted the exceptional circumstances surrounding their potential European campaign, arguing that maintaining optimal squad conditions is essential for competing at the highest level. The club sought to align their domestic and European commitments strategically, drawing parallels with Paris Saint-Germain’s previous requests for similar accommodations.
The LFP, however, delivered a decisive ‘no’ in response. During an emergency virtual meeting of the Professional Football League’s board on Monday evening, members voted unanimously to reject OL’s proposal. The decision was motivated by concerns over the precedent such a postponement could set, particularly as Ligue 1+ now broadcasts every match live. The league emphasized the importance of maintaining a consistent fixture schedule to avoid disruption.
