Ousmane Sonko’s public challenge to President Diomaye Faye’s direction

Behind the address delivered this Sunday in Sadio, within the Diourbel region, Ousmane Sonko presented what appeared less as a call to action and more as a thinly veiled reckoning with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Under the guise of an assessment, the Pastef leader repeatedly underscored points designed to redefine the power dynamics at the highest echelons of the state.

By emphasizing his crucial role in designating Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the substitute candidate following the invalidation of his own candidacy in 2024, Ousmane Sonko sought to reaffirm his instrumental contribution to the historic March 2024 victory. This was the Pastef leader’s way of reminding everyone, two years on, of who deserves the credit for ascending to power and, by extension, a form of legitimacy he believes remains insufficiently acknowledged.

He adopted a similar approach when discussing the current administration’s progress. Ousmane Sonko lamented a sense of lost hope, asserting that the residents of Sadio were acutely aware of this, before highlighting what he characterized as President Faye’s divergence from the original vision presented to the Senegalese populace. This phrasing, which implicitly separates the head of state’s trajectory from that of the party, signifies a public distancing rarely expressed so overtly by the Pastef leader.

By proclaiming that 80% of the political struggle had been spearheaded under his impetus, and by framing the upcoming 2026 and 2029 elections as pivotal stages to complete what he considers his own project, Ousmane Sonko positioned himself as the guardian of the foundational ideology, rather than merely a supporter of the incumbent government. The message, directed both at the grassroots activists and the highest levels of government, thus appears intended to reassert his political ascendancy over an executive team that he, with barely concealed words, suggests is straying from the path.
