Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a clear directive to relevant ministers, urging them to implement all essential measures to avert potential flooding ahead of the upcoming rainy season.
During a recent Council of Ministers meeting, the head of government emphasized firm instructions to enhance the nation’s preparedness for the risks associated with the wintering period. Government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye confirmed that a series of urgent interventions are slated for immediate implementation.
Sonko further stressed the critical importance of pre-positioning intervention resources and organizing a comprehensive inter-ministerial simulation exercise. This crucial drill, scheduled before June 15, 2026, aims to rigorously assess the state services’ responsiveness in the face of potential disasters.
A communiqué from the Council of Ministers highlighted that the government is already actively engaged in various preparatory actions. These include the thorough clearing of water evacuation networks, meticulous verification of drainage infrastructure, strategic deployment of pumping equipment, and the development of robust emergency plans for identified high-risk areas.
Recognizing the multifaceted nature of flood mitigation efforts, Ousmane Sonko called upon all state departments to operate in seamless synergy. This collaborative endeavor will be coordinated by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with essential support from the Ministry of Interior, particularly concerning civil protection and crisis management issues.
