The evening’s disturbances began near Pont Robert Schwint, where approximately fifty individuals obstructed traffic. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers faced a barrage of projectiles, primarily from minors. Five police officers sustained minor injuries during the confrontation. Motorists caught in the gridlock were startled as youths climbed onto their vehicles, resulting in damage to at least one car. The group subsequently moved towards the city center, concentrating around Place de la Révolution.
Our reporting indicates that tear gas was deployed across several streets, including Grande rue, Battant, and rue Courbet. Patrons enjoying outdoor terraces and other passers-by sought refuge inside restaurants as the tear gas spread. Residents also reported electric bicycles being toppled and damaged, alongside various acts of vandalism targeting public street furniture.
Besançon mayor condemns escalating post-match violence
Ludovic Fagaut, the Mayor of Besançon, swiftly condemned the violent acts via social media. “Nothing can justify exploiting a popular sporting event to cause destruction, disrupt public order, and foster a sense of insecurity,” he stated, emphasizing that efforts are underway to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
Reinforcements from the CRS (Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité) were dispatched to the scene. An estimated 600 to 800 individuals were observed moving through the city following the match, with a contingent of up to one hundred young people periodically turning aggressive. Approximately fifty of these individuals directly confronted law enforcement personnel.
As of now, five individuals have been apprehended in connection with the incidents, comprising four minors and one adult.
