Prime minister ousmane sonko urges updated communal flood plans in Senegal

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko recently addressed critical matters concerning flood prevention and management during a Council of Ministers meeting held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. He commenced by commending the diligent preparatory efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, alongside various other state departments. These crucial initiatives include thorough network clean-ups, comprehensive inspections of drainage infrastructure, strategic pre-positioning of essential pumping equipment, and the careful formulation of emergency response strategies.

Emphasizing the inherently inter-ministerial nature of effective flood mitigation, Prime Minister Sonko directed all government services to foster seamless collaboration. This concerted effort is to be meticulously coordinated by the Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with vital support from the Ministry of Interior, particularly concerning aspects of civil protection and comprehensive crisis management.

Consequently, he issued explicit directives to the relevant ministers, urging them to implement appropriate measures without delay. The head of government called for the immediate execution of several key actions. These include the urgent updating and endorsement of all communal emergency plans, a rigorous verification of the operational readiness of early warning systems and public communication channels, the strategic pre-positioning of intervention resources, and the scheduling of a comprehensive inter-ministerial simulation exercise to be conducted before June 15, 2026.
